GEN-X IS COMPLEX

Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980, came of age in an old-world paradigm with two opposing views. Heavily influenced by the pure grit of their grand parents generation, the Great Generation of the WWII era, they developed a strong work ethic and learned what it means to be good citizens. Conversely, the counter-culture ideology of their Baby Boomer parents had a tremendous impact on them as well. The opposing influences from these two great generations created a somewhat complicated start for young GEN-Xers.

While their “rebel-minded parents” were out raging against the many social injustices and outrageous events of their time, the children of GENERATION-X were often left on their own to fend for themselves. This was done purposely with the aim of helping the children build character and learn to become independent, which produced both positive and negative results. On the positive side, the children became exactly what their Baby Boomer parents wanted them to be; responsible, hard working human beings, independently minded and skilled at critical thinking. As adults, they tend to thrive in business with GENERATION-X producing more successful entrepreneurs than any generation preceding it. On the negative side, all of this sometimes causes individuals to believe that their material success is the true measure of their worthiness as a human being. This is a mistaken idea that leads to a mindset of greed, which is something that GEN-Xers still grapple with to this day.

Perhaps the most important aspect of GEN-X, which is rarely talked about, is how they navigated
the most intense decade of the Cold War… the 1980’s.

During the 60’s and 70’s the Cold War was raging, and the threat of nuclear annihilation was a constant. However nuclear armament peaked in the 80’s just as the first wave of GEN-Xers were coming into adulthood. During this time it was widely promulgated by different cultures from around the world, and by many ancient religions, that “a great nuclear holocaust” would surely arrive and destroy us all. Fear of this infamous event was palpable until the unthinkable happened. In 1989, much to everyones complete shock and surprise, the Soviet Union collapsed. We can thank all people living at that time for their thoughts and decisions, prayers, meditations and for the brave actions that defused the greatest threat humanity has ever known. Of course the NUKES themselves have not “gone away.” Here we are three decades later, full well knowing the futile nature of nuclear war, but until humanity completely dismantles every weapon, the threat remains and looms.

simply agree to get along and help each other.
